Kunai, Karl – Born: 2 Aug 1896 Contact: Kris Kunai
My grandfather’s name was Carl Kunai in the US. My father told me that my grandmother always called him Charlie, the German variant is Carl/Karl. He came to the US in 1914, at age 17. When my father was in high school, he read letters from his sister written in German. I believe he had a 3rd grade education. On his Ellis Island manifest he stated he was from Orczifalva. My father also told me he was running away from the Kaiser army. Records also indicate his father was also Carl or Charles or Karl (depending on if he changed it or not.) The name Kunai does not sound German-Hungarian. So I would have to believe he changed it at point of departure which was Bremen and he was joining a cousin “N. Pifelos” at 218 East 124th St. in Manhattan NY.
This intrigues me so much because of lost family in Romania. I’m hitting brick walls because of the name. I wrote the married name of my grandfather’s sister somewhere and have misplaced it in a recent move. My grandfather married an Irish woman at a young age and had no children. She relocated back to Ireland and He then met my grandmother and they were never officially married. I guess you would call that the common law marriage. They had 6 children and my father was the youngest Martin Frank Kunai. His brother was also Carl Kunai. I’m new at all this, but very determined to find relatives out there. Thanks for all your help. Kris Kunai

Kraus Church Records Extracted by Mary Lindemann – 14 Dec 2005
Kraus appears in the records. Unfortunately the baptismal records stop long before the marriages do. I did find a Phillipus Kraus son of the deceased Petri Kraus and Barbara Hild, a soldier from Orsidorf marrying Anna Tengl daughter of Carolus Tengl and Elisabetha Guth a commoner from Orsidorf on July 23, 1871. That may be a possibility for your Miklos Kraus born in 1878. I haven’t gone back much beyond 1871 yet so there may be other possibilities. If Phillip rings a bell for you, let me know and I’ll see if I can find Peter & Barbara’s wedding. Otherwise I will be checking back a few more years on the weddings before I give up the chase.
